Family watching television, c. 1958

These days, you can get Netflix, Hulu, Crackle, Amazon Prime streaming, and countless other content makers to connect with your television through some connector. The important thing is that you have a television. It’s your portal to a different world.

Watching a movie on your computer comes with it the distractions of the modern era we live in. We don’t have notifications or interruptions coming up (unless you’re on your XBox) saying that your friend liked your status on your television. Whether your television is big or small, having the experience of watching it as it is removed from you is better. You can have a better view and clearer thoughts because of it. That way you can tweet or look at Facebook on your computer, if you must. You focus better than when your screen is 18 inches from your face.

Watching movies takes you to a different place. I’ve had the opportunity to travel and I’m very grateful for that. For those that don’t have this luxury, watching movies is a prime way to transport yourself. I know this sounds obvious.

Owning a television, with a subscription service like Netflix streaming, has enabled me to see older and foreign films that would not have been available at Blockbuster or some local movie store. Having the television allows others to enter the room. You have the noises, the colors, the actors, the costumes, the setting, and a storyline which should entertain you in some way.

Even if it’s not factually correct, opening your mind to a movie can help you grow as a person. You put yourself in other people’s shoes and your empathy and compassion for others can only grow. Surrendering your time and allowing yourself to become fully engrossed in a show or movie means that you absorbing other cultures and learning.

This isn’t an endorsement of watching reruns on TBS. This is an endorsement for watching shows or films that take you far and away, without the interruption of commercial breaks.
