To be utterly and completely honest, I haven’t watched a Simpsons episode in years, until today. The 500th episode aired last night. During the time that I spent in South Africa growing up, I vividly remember watching The Simpsons and loving it. It was a treat from America, one that you didn’t get every day - and we loved the reruns just like many other countries do

The Simpsons is the third longest running scripted primetime show on American television. It’s got at least two more seasons but I’m betting it’ll keep going. I launched into the 500th episode without any precursor knowledge because, hey, it is The Simpsons. They can’t have changed that much. Celebrating 500 episodes is a milestone that they definitely made a point of acknowledging, even if it is the most meaningless milestone of all.

This particular show started with a drill so that the town of Springfield can talking about banishing the Simpsons without their knowledge. Their plan is halted, though, when the Simpsons happen upon the meeting and end up leaving their beloved hometown. They go to the “Outlands” where there are no rules and all ideas must be carried out, good or bad. Their new neighbor is Julian Assange, of Wikileaks fame, who apparently phoned in his cameo.

The beginning was a cycle of the hundreds of opening sequences, where the family sits on the couch, which seemed to last forever. It was so familiar and iconic, a great way to show how far they’ve come. This episode actually made me laugh so I’d say they’ve still got it.
