Not to be exploitative or anything (re: the above photo) but a little more than 3 years ago, the night before the Grammys®, Chris Brown beat the living shit out of Rihanna. Indeed he was screaming that he would “kill her.” She’s lucky he didn’t. Seriously, read the police report.
Chris Brown didn’t do a day of jail time. He “performed” more than 100 hours of community service instead.
To her credit, Rihanna never wished him ill. She even tried as best she could to avoid being an advocate for domestic violence prevention—despite the public’s overwhelming desire for her to speak out. To many it seemed that Rihanna was quick to forgive Brown. (We’re not going to get into that.) She may have gotten over it (and good for her—many other women do not have such an opportunity) but that doesn’t mean that you have to.
Now it’s come to light that the pair has gotten back together to make not one but two songs. Both were released yesterday—on Rihanna’s birthday no less. One, “Birthday Cake” is a thinly veiled ode to sex. Needless to say, we’ll pass.
How do you feel about Rihanna turning the other cheek? Is this really what empowerment looks like? It’s making us a little sick.
