This fickle weather has really made me feel cooped up inside. There isn’t enough snow to venture into snow sports, there isn’t enough sunlight to get outside after work, and it definitely isn’t warm enough for my taste. As a result, I’ve been listening to a lot of bands with darker sounds.

This collection of songs should make you feel a little more badass than the routine of work and school normally allows. The genre I have in mind is somewhat indeterminable, but inspiration comes from the likes of Jack White and his cohort in The Dead Weather, Alison Mosshart of The Kills.

The Dead Weather typically evokes a dark, guttural, and abstract sound rich with non-instrumental embellishment. Some of the videos focusing on Mosshart often bring out the sexy nature of the vocal variations, and I hear the songs slightly differently now. I haven’t seen much response to the work White has done on this most recent endeavor aside from his regular following, but I can’t get enough of his work with The Dead Weather on the album “Horehound.” Without anything new from them in recent months, I decided to go elsewhere to get similar sounds. These are a few bands with the same deconstructed sound, heavy on the bass and full of depth.
